So is it really enough to have gone through addiction treatment? What does addiction recovery even mean? What does it entail?

What does it takes to be sober–and stay that way?

5 rules of recovery

People can have several opinions about sobriety, but the best ones are from those who have gone through the hurdles and hardwork themselves. Also, at the end of the day, it’s up to you to carve your path towards a sustainable sober life.

However you choose to do it, here are 5 essential rules you must live by.

5 Essential Rules of Addiction Recovery

  1. Surround yourself with a reliable and robust support system. In recovery, it’s even harder to do it alone. While others manage, most find the journey easier and more fulfilling when shared with others. So, surround yourself with people who are rooting for you and your well-being. Be around people who understand what exactly you are going through and stay away from those that get you down.
  2. Be completely honest. Be honest with yourself, first and foremost. When you were in active addiction, you may have lied your way through many situations, but this time around, the lies you tell others–including the lies you tell–aren’t really going to stick. While it’s painful to face the truth, no one gains from hiding from it.
  3. Be open. Be open to the program, which has helped thousands, if not millions, of individuals and their families worldwide. Don’t jump to conclusions or easily close your doors from learning situations.
  4. Believe in yourself. Give yourself more credit. You know you have it in you, just don’t let yourself be swayed into believing otherwise. It can be done and you can do it!
  5. Do whatever it takes. Now that you are in recovery, the very first thing you have to take care of is your sobriety. Fail at that and soon you’ll find everything else in your life slip away. Put your recovery first and everything else will follow.

Remember, recovery is a journey and your journey starts here at Bridges of Hope.
