Date rape drugs are used prior to sexual exploitation and sexual assault. It is illegal, but unfortunately common all over the world. Sexual assault refers to any sexual activity that the person, or victim, doesn’t consent to or, in this case, unconscious and can’t therefore put up any defense.

What’s dangerous about date rape drugs is that it is usually colorless, odorless, and tasteless. A person who is being drugged can’t often tell until it’s too late.

What are the most common date rape drugs?

There are three most commonly used date rape drugs:

1. Rohypnol. Also known as roofies, trip-and-fall, roach, rope, and forget pill. This comes as a small, round white pill, but newer onces are oval and green-gray. It easily dissolves in liquid. It turns clear liquids into bright blue while making dark liquids cloudy. However, these changes can be hard to notice in a busy club or a dark room.

2. GHB. Short for gamma hydroxybutyric acid. Its street names include: cherry meth easy lay, G, G-juice, gook, liquid ecstasy, and salt water. It comes as a colorless, odorless liquid, a white powder, or a white pill. It can make drinks taste salty, but adding sugar or fruit juice to the drink can easily mask the taste.

3. KetamineAlso known as black hole, kitkat, special K, and super acid. It comes as a liquid or as a white powder and is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. This makes it harder to know if you have been slipped with ketamine in your drink.

Effects of Date Rape Drugs

These drugs have a powerful sedating effect, depending on the dosage. Mixing them with alcohol can make the effects of the drugs much stronger–or even fatal.

  • confusion
  • loss of consciousness
  • problems talking
  • sleepiness
  • dizziness
  • muscle relaxation
  • dream-like feeling
  • slow heart rate
  • out-of-body experiences (with Ketamine)
  • loss of coordination

Once you have taken these drugs and have lost consciousness, you may not be able to remember what has happened to you. This makes it hard for victims not to realize if they have been drugged and assaulted.

How not to be a victim of date rape?

  • Don’t accept drinks from other people
  • Open bottles or can yourself
  • Keep your drink close with you all the time
  • Don’t share drinks
  • Don’t drink from common, open containers
  • If someone offers you a drink, go with the person and watch the drink being poured
  • If you can, finish your drink before going to the bathroom and get yourself a new one when you come back
  • Don’t drink anything that smells or tastes strange
  • Have a friend with you to make sure nothing happens, preferrably a non-drinking friend
  • If you have left your drink unattended, pour it out and get yourself a new one
  • If you feel drunk even if you haven’t drank a lot or if you feel strange, seek help immediately

These drugs, while used as a date rape drug, are also highly addictive.
