It’s known that meth, or shabu, causes feelings of euphoria. However, aside from that, it also increases sex drive while decreasing inhibitions, creating the perfect recipe for drug-induced sexual promiscuity.

Methemphetamine, meth, or shabu, is a powerful stimulant that is widely abused worldwide. It is highly addictive as it provides users with an extremely pleasurable high because it stimulates the part of the brain that releases the feel-good neurochemical called dopamine. Aside from producing feelings of euphoria, meth also creates sexual arousal. Therefore, it is no wonder that many meth users, both men and women, often go into sexual overdrives as the drug spikes their sex drive and lowers their inhibitions.

Meth and Sex: The Perfect Storm

Many studies of meth users have uncovered that many of them have more sexual partners and, since they are not in their right state of mind, are less likely to use protection. These studies also say that many meth users are more likely to use sex in return for meth or money to buy meth. Often, these meth users engage in sexual activities with fellow meth users, and they are more likely to have contracted a sexually transmitted disease at one point in their lives while in the influence of the drug.

Meth boosts self-confidence, alertness, stamina, and spikes adrenaline. Pair this with fewer, if not non-existent, inhibitions and heightened sex drive, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for sexual promiscuity that brings many dangers in itself.

To make the problem worse, meth users often have extremely aggressive sex that can last for several hours, as a result of the boost in energy and impaired judgement. Many who use meth to inject may also share needles and therefore increase the risk for spreading highly infectious diseases as well.

Furthermore, having unprotected sex can risk the spread of HIV and hepatitis among meth users. There is also rapid progression of HIV for long-term meth users due to weakened immune system. They may also more likely to avoid taking good care of their hygiene and even forego proper medication, so the chances of HIV developing into a full-blown AIDS is high as well. Aside from HIV, meth users have a 6-fold chance of contracting syphilis.

The Dangers for Men

The irony here is that while meth increases the sex drive of men, they also find it hard to sustain their erections. Long-term meth use can lead to impotence. Many use medications such as Viagra to help enhance their sexual performance while they are also high on meth. In high levels of both substances, the users may experience elevated blood pressure, stroke, heart attack or overdose.

The Dangers for Women

Since women metabolize meth differently from men, their sexual experiences can differ. In fact, more women use meth to lose weight than to enhance their sexual experiences. However, meth poses great risks for women as abuse, violence, rape, and diseases can be higher compared to women who don’t use meth.

Also, pregnant women who use meth while pregnant may give birth to children who are premature or have low birth weight, heart defects, cleft palate disorders, and other health problems.
