Images of cold-blooded killers and crazily laughing villains can easily come up with the mention of the word.

While the media did a great job of creating a sordid, horrid picture of a psychopath, which is a result of genetics (as opposed to sociopathy, which is the result of environment such as trauma or abuse) There is actually sociopathy, which is more frightening–because it could just very well be your father, mother, spouse, aunt, uncle, or child. Sociopaths can look like us, talk like us, be among us, but they have one differenceL they have no conscience.

Research states that sociopath can’t feel basic emotions such as love, affection, intimacy, or responsibility. However, they now what these look like, and are therefore able to convincingly portray them.

What is Sociopathy

“Sociopath” and “psychopath” are two words that are often mixed up. However, they both refer to an antisocial personality disorder and both exhibit the following conditions:

pathological lying and enjoying lying to others

deceiving others

showing little to no concern for other people’s safety

displaying aggressive behavior

irresponsible acts

inability to feel remorse or guilt

lack of shame

breaking laws or rules

disregard for authority

impulsive behavior

manipulative behavior

conning

cruelty

superficial charm

grandiose sense of self

shallow emotions

incapacity for love and affection

callousness and lack of empathy

promiscuity

lack of realistic life plan

parasitic lifestyle

criminal or entrepreneurial versatiltiy

Sociopathy is believed to be a product of childhood trauma, abuse, neglect, and other environmental factors.

Because of their impulsivity and erratic behavior, they are unable to hold down jobs and are unable to form emotional attachments. They cannot form healthy and long-term relationships, and often merely bond with others who have the same disposition as them.

Still, sociopaths can be charismatic as well if they want to. They can be effective con-artists with a hidden agenda. They often become charismatic and attractive in order to get what they want.

Drug Addiction and Sociopathy

Since sociopathy is caused by environmental factors, there is also a clear connection between drug addiction and sociopathy. Addiction affects the brain and causes mental illnesses, while drugs used to treat mental illness can also further complicate the situation.

People with mental illnesses such as sociopathy are at higher risk for drug abuse and addiction. The effects of their sociopathic behavior further give them emotional pain, which they also tend to internalize, causing them to look for a way to escape, which often leads them to drugs. In fact, according to the American Medical Association, up to three quarters of sociopaths abused drugs and/or alcohol.

Also, abusing drugs fits the profile of a sociopath, as they have no regard for the law or the authorities, and they also more often engage in risk-taking behavior. They also have loose moral and ethical codes, so they are not deterred by any rules or expectations.

Whether drug addiction and sociopathy coexists with each other, both need professional help and treatment. The more drug addiction goes on, the higher the risk of mental illnesses such as sociopathy. Unraveling the mental illness from the addiction and treating them both can provide the road to a healthier, happier, and more positive life.

If you or your loved ones are struggling with substance abuse and addiction, contact us today.
