There’s this psychological and even spiritual tug of war as many thoughts and conflicts plague the addict entering rehab.

Here in the Philippines, people enter drug rehab facilities voluntarily or with the urging of their families or spouses. Often, they will feel torn within themselves. They may believe, deep inside, that they have problems that need to be addressed. However, they may also feel a sense of uncertainty, doubt, or even denial.

Reality Check

The reality is, drug treatment is not meant to be easy for you. Addiction is a complicated, even aggressive, disorder that you yourself may not come to understand.

Still, the fact still remains that the purpose of treatment, no matter how long it is, is to uncover the underlying issues that cause substance abuse and teach you the tools necessary to address these and then live a healthy life in recovery.

However there are those who want to leave treatment early, and these are the top 5 reasons:

Top 5 reasons why people leave rehab early:

1. I am different than them. You may think that in some way you are better, smarter, stronger, sounder, or just different from your peers in rehab. This kind of thinking puts up mental and emotional walls between yourself and your peers, making you incapable of absorbing and internalizing the precious experiences that are supposed to teach you. This thinking also makes you detached from the reality of your own addiction.

If you stick around your treatment long enough and with an open heart and mind, you will see the disease of addiction for what it is. You will also realize that you are surrounded by equally unique people, each with their own stories, and that they can teach you more things than you think.

2. I can’t handle detox and sobriety. The first few weeks of treatment can be very uncomfortable and disconcerting as withdrawal symptoms set in. Depending on your length of drug use and the type of substance you use, your withdrawal will be different.

You can be assured, though, that rehab facilities have medical staff that are supervising your withdrawal and that the detox is designed to minimize the pain, discomfort, and danger of withdrawal. Also, you can talk to the medical staff and counselors about your struggles while being in withdrawal and as you enter a period of complete sobriety.

3. I don’t like the way the treatment is going. There are many versions of this, such as you don’t like the facility, the counselors, the system, the food, the treatment, and everything. You will always have an excuse to dislike and therefore refuse to accept the goal and premises of the treatment.

What you have to know, though, is that you, just like many who are undergoing treatment like you, are using everything and anything to find justify why you don’t need to be in that place. Instead of taking responsibility for your actions, accepting that you need help, and opening up your mind to what you can get out of the treatment, you place the blame everywhere else around you.

The truth is, and many recovering addicts can attest to this, deep down, you are screaming for help and the only way you can begin your recovery is if you listen to this voice inside you.

4. I can do this on my own. I don’t need rehab. It’s common to be confident in your own sobriety. After all, you may think it’s your own life and you know yourself better than anyone, better even than the counselors and psychologists.

After the detox phase and all the drugs and discomfort have left your body, you may feel better about yourself and your mind will be clearer. With this, you may feel like you have already conquered the battle. However, that’s only the beginning. You haven’t even gone half the battle. What treatment addresses after you clear your mind and body are the underlying conditions and reasons behind your addiction.

Aside from this, you will also have to learn/relearn recovery tools that are necessary to help you cope with the real life when you leave the facility.

5. I can’t afford treatment. Unfortunately, this is also a common reason for pulling out of rehab early. Many people, though they are willing, have this obstacle to deal with. Often, it is their families who have to stop their treatment because they can’t afford it.

However, if you look at it, there are more costs to stopping treatment than continuing it. Of course, getting out of your comfort zone can make you feel all those kinds of things. However, once you understand that there are professionals, as well as supporting staff who have been in your shoes, you will see that you have everything you need to be on the path to recovery–you need only to open your mind to all the opportunities it presents to you.

Are you ready for treatment?
