However, while it can be utterly tempting to blame their friends, you have to also consider other significant factors that affect your child’s predisposition to drug use, such as personality, genetics, stresses, past traumas, coping mechanisms, and relationships with family.

You can’t boil it down to just their friends being a bad influence;, but as a parent, you can do something:

1. Acknowledge it. Many parents are prone to denying the problems with their children as soon as they arise. Guess what–this isn’t going to help your child. First, acknowledge that there is something wrong.

2. Don’t look the other way. Explaining drug use away as just a phase sends the wrong message to your kids and they might be more likely to use or get drunk.

3. Check on your own drug use. While you may not really use illicit drugs, you may still be using prescription medicine that your child can get to. Keep your prescription and over-the-counter drugs in a secure place.

4. Talk to your child. Take time to make your child understand the dangers of peer pressure, bad influence, drug and alcohol use. It has been well-known that teens who learn about the dangerous consequences of abusing these substances are less likely to use.

5. Take a look at your family history. People who have family members who were or are addicted are more likely to be addicted themselves.

6. They are not “bad.” Stop labeling your child as a “bad kid,” only that they make “bad decisions.” There is a big difference.

7. Let them be safe. Let them know that your child can count on you in times of trouble, that you can be someone they can call if they don’t have a ride home after a night of partying. You don’t have to coddle or enable them, though. Make it clear that their actions have consequences, but you are also concerned about their safety.

8. Keep a connection. You don’t have to hover over your child all the time to keep off bad influence. What you can do, though, is to have casual and light conversations with your child about illicit drugs, alcohol, and their consequences.

9. Seek help. If your child is indeed addicted or is abusing substances like drugs and alcohol, then don’t be afraid to seek help. You can start with a counselor or doctor, or you can call us at Bridges of Hope: 09175098826.

10. Seek help for yourself too. Finding out that your child has been using drugs can give you mixed emotions. In short, it can be overwhelming. However, remember to take care of yourself too. Talk to a professional or a fellow parent who may be going through the same thing.

Don’t wait until it’s too late.
