But it doesn’t have to be your reality.

Having someone with substance abuse disorder or addiction in the family can make the household dysfunctional. And while not everyone who uses drugs or alcohol becomes violent, those who abuse members of their family are more likely to have been using drugs or alcohol.

Drugs and alcohol can cause irrational, unpredictable, aggressive, and violent behavior. For example, a meth addict who is craving for another hit can become restless and irritable, causing discord and fights among family members. In the same vein, a person who is intoxicated with alcohol can become loud, aggressive, and prone to violent outbursts, even causing physical harm towards others.

Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence

Unfortunately, many of those who are tagged as chronic domestic violators often get aggressive when they are under the influence of substances such as drugs or alcohol. This causes a threat to the family, the spouse, children, and relatives. Aside from physical violence, these people are also exposed to mental and emotional abuse.

The family members become neglected. Even children are physically, emotionally, and sexually abused, which is a saddening reality. Often, family members are afraid to report such abuse and violence for fear of getting hurt or threatened, or to protect the addicted loved one.

However, there is no justification for being violent towards another person, or a loved one. When a family member who has a substance abuse problems starts to harm the family with physical harm, sexual abuse, emotional violence, or any form of threat, the family needs to look after itself. The other members of the family has to prioritize self-preservation over the needs of the abusive and addicted loved one.

Seek Help for Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence

Remember, you can’t help your addicted loved one if you yourself are badly injured or mentally or physically deteriorating. No matter how much you love your family member, if they pose a risk to you or the rest of your family, the authorities need to get involved and professionals may need to intervene.

You don’t need to live or settle in a life where threat and danger from your very own loved one is a reality to you day in and day out. Get yourself and the rest of your family members safe, especially when children and minors are involved. Again, there is no justification or rationalization when children are being hurt, abused or violated. If you really love your addicted loved one, the best thing that you can do for them is to make them get treatment before things get worse.

Learn your rights and learn your options.
