The same goes for addiction treatment, and the fears that keep you from getting the treatment that you need. Let’s take a look at these fears and what you can do about them.

Before you get to that point when you consider alcohol treatment, there’s more likely a lot of time, pain, and wreckage that have already occurred. For some, they have completely reached their bottom and have done irreparable damage to themselves, their health, their families, their reputation, or they may have even be institutionalized.

However, even if they’ve reached rock bottom, many are still hesitant to seek treatment because of many fears. Let’s take a look at the 6 fears that’s keeping you from seeking help.

6 Fears That’s Keeping You From Getting Addiction Treatment

1. Fear of withdrawal. You’re scared of how your body and mind will react when you don’t have your drugs. You feel like you just can’t handle days stretching out and you’re sober, losing your mind over when you fan get drugs and how you can go about it.

What you can do: Withdrawal is not easy especially for those who have been using large amounts of drugs for long periods of time. However, going into a rehab facility such as Bridges of Hope allows you to have a medically supervised detox so your withdrawal is as comfortable and as safe as you can get.

2. Fear of facing reality. You’ve been using drugs to escape your problems, to operate under the haze of your chemical-induced world. Now that you don’t have the drugs anymore, you may be afraid to finally face the wreckage: the people you’ve hurt and abused, the problems your addiction has brought, the guilt and remorse that you may feel inside you.

What you can do: All this mix of feelings coming at you at once can be overwhelming. But remember, there’s always calm after the storm. Think of this as a way of building your life anew, starting over fresh.

3. Fear of change. You were used to your lifestyle, your routine of chasing after your next high. You’re afraid of changing back into who you were before you started using–or worse, that you won’t know yourself anymore without the drugs.

What you can do: Change is scary for everyone, even without addiction. However, this change is a great catalyst for you to live your life for the better. Use this as a way to envision the life that you want and finally do your life over, and do things better.

4. Fear of losing something. Now that your life is peeled free from addiction and all the lies and cover-ups, you might feel like you could lose your loved ones, your friends, the people you run around with during active addiction. You may not know who or what will be left now that you’re sober and living a new, different, life.

What you can do: If your friends ditch you just because you’ve become sober, then they aren’t your friends after all. The things and people you lose are really not worth stressing over. These losses are things you can’t control, so you have to learn to let go.

5. Fear of feeling. Now that you don’t have the drugs to keep you in an unfeeling haze, you might be overwhelmed by all the emotions and pain that you now have to face. And after all, going into treatment would really require that you face your feelings.

What you can do: You are stronger, braver, smarter, and better now. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed and to feel those feelings, but don’t let these hold you back from that better life ahead of you. Have a support group, talk to your counselor, keep your family close, and just connect to someone who can help you navigate these strong feelings without compromising your sobriety.

6. Fear of failure. One of the many things that keep us from trying in the first place could be the fear of failing. Even without addiction, failure is such a great deterrent from taking a step towards something. In addiction treatment, once you decide to be sober and get treatment, it’s not a mistake. Just keep trying and don’t let the fear of failure trap you.

What you can do: Just take that step. A step towards recovery is not a wasted move. Just keep moving forward and take it a day at a time.

Get started on a better life with the treatment that is right for you.
