This behavior is persistently continued even when it causes concern from people around them and causes themselves harm.

Behavioral addictions are also called process addictions. The most common behavioral addictions are gambling, shopping, hoarding, stealing (or kleptomania). Still, with the right intervention, these behavioral addictions are still treatable much like substance addictions.

Factors Contributing to Behavioral Addictions

There are many factors that can make one have a higher risk to develop a behavioral addiction compared to others. These factors include genetics, environment, history of trauma, history of substance abuse, and personality. Often, people with the perfect yet unfortunate “recipe” of these factors are those that have an “addictive personality.”

Those who suffer substance abuse often share the same personality traits as those with behavioral addictions. They may exhibit impulsivity, attention-seeking, sensation or stimuli-seeking, and harm avoidance.

There are also studies that show people with substance abuse disorder who are at high risk for behavioral disorder. For example, compulsive gamblers are 3.8 times more likely to develop alcohol disorder. Still, both substance and behavior addictions can be managed or treated with rehabilitation so people can recover.

Signs of Behavioral Addictions

Common traits of behavioral addictions are:

unusual preoccupation with the behavior or deed

inability to regulate the behavior

greater desire to do the activity, which means built up tolerance

withdrawal when the behavior is cut down or avoided

depression, anxiety, restlessness and/or mood swings when not engaged in the activity

Addiction, whether substance or behavior, can be treated.
