Last Monday, we have celebrated the Independence Day of our country, as one nation united amidst the many challenges facing us. Our Independence Day has reminded us of the rights to liberty and freedom–the things that our ancestors and heroes have fought for.<\/p>\n
Since then, it’s nice to say that we still have made an incredible progress towards making this independence a reality–and the people who are still fighting for it today.<\/p>\n

However, there are still many things that are holding our fellow Filipinos and their families hostage on a daily basis. These people live in a sort of freedom that is actually a double-edges sword, as their loved ones are propelled on a downward spiral of substance abuse.<\/p>\n
Abuse of Freedom and Addiction<\/strong><\/p>\nAbuse of freedom can have its downfalls and risks. For one, drug use and drinking have caused people to succumb to addiction. It doesn’t matter what their age, location, educational attainment, political beliefs or socioeconomic status are. Everyone can fall victim to addiction.<\/p>\n
We have our freedom and liberty, and with this comes the freedom to use, abuse, and even get addicted to substances and behaviors.<\/p>\n
This abuse of freedom, from gambling to the wee hours, drinking out with friends, buying drugs from neighborhood pushers, are all a matter of abuse of freedom. We are all able to live as freely as we want to, but our choices often lead to destruction, especially when addiction is involved.<\/p>\n
The Struggle with Substance Dependence<\/strong><\/p>\nWhen addiction comes into your life, you forfeit your freedom in place of your dependence to drugs, alcohol, and other substances such as prescription drugs. This can be dangerous to you and very heartbreaking to your family.<\/p>\n
You addiction have taken over your life and those of your family members’.<\/p>\n
You are Free to Choose<\/strong><\/p>\nWhile you or someone dear to you may have become slaves to their addiction, there’s still a choice–and there’s still hope.<\/p>\n
You have to acknowledge that there is a problem and understand and accept that in order to turn this around, you have to make a choice. You have to give up your dependence on drugs, alcohol or behavior addictions in order to become free to live a better, positive, more fulfilling life.<\/p>\n
When are you going to celebrate true independence? You–and your family–is meant to live with life, liberty, security, happiness. You deserve that kind of life and not of addiction.<\/p>\n
