Remember this: You didn’t cause the addiction, you can’t control the addiction, and you can’t cure it. The more you understand that this is beyond your control, the better

2. Healing takes time. Addiction is a chronic and progressive disease that won’t let go of your loved one so easily. Acknowledging the addiction may take a long while. They may even not acknowledge that they have a problem or even an addiction. And as for treatment, it could take months to even years and for some, they have to go to rehab multiple times.

3. Know what you can. Know what they are addicted about, what the symptoms and signs of addiction are, what are effects of the specific drugs or substances, and what you can do to help.

4. Plan a conversation. Find a place and time that are comfortable to the addict so they could be sober and are probably better equipped to listen to what you have to say.

5. Don’t forget yourself. It’s easy to get lost in the chaos. However, the moment you forget yourself is the moment you lose.

7. Don’t enable. While this is difficult, you have to stop enabling them. It is so much better not to cushion or support them, but instead let them receive the full extent of the consequences of the action.

Finding out that someone dear to you, like a close friend or family member, is addicted can be devastating.
