However, as a recovering addict or alcoholic, you may use this Lenten Season as a turning point.

And even if you’re not struggling with substance abuse or are recovering from them, you may also use this season to broaden the challenge a little bit. How about giving up caffeine, soda, or fast food? Or how about giving up social media to reflect on what it means to be a Christian or Catholic, or just a human being this Holy Week?

The Challenge of Lent

This Lenten Season, make a commitment to abstain from something you have a problem with. It doesn’t have to be an addiction or a narcotic. It can be certain activities or attitudes. You can start today and continue on until Easter Sunday, or even beyond.

Just try it.

You may discover that you like life better without it. You may even feel more positive and accomplished. You may gain a lot more with just your complete willingness and dedication to let it go.

Besides, if you eventually come back to it, one thing you’ve learned is that you still have some measure of control over it and not the other way around.

So it doesn’t matter if it’s your irritability, gossipping, too much time on the couch or on social media. The fact that you’re willing to abstain from something that is causing you and other people problems is a good start.

And even if it’s alcohol or drugs, abstaining this Lent can also teach you a valuable lesson about your habits. This is because if you have tried to control or abstain your use, no matter how repeatedly you try, then it’s a clear manifestation of addiction. It also shows how powerless you can be over it.

Look closely at the story of Lent. It’s a story of change, of transition, transformation, and changing your life.

If all things fail, Bridges of Hope is here to provide top-notch, private addiction rehabilitation treatment.
