Where do you draw the line between concern and meddling? Find out below.

Substance abuse can easily turn into substance addiction. In fact, there’s a thin line that separates the two, making it hard to recognize, especially on someone you know and care about, like a friend. A friend’s addiction can also be hard to face. There may be times when you wonder if you should mention about your friend’s addiction or just keep mum about it.

First Comes Concern

If you are concerned about your friend’s drug or alcohol use, then it’s more likely that there’s really something wrong. If you feel like you should talk directly to them about it, you probably should, even if in passing or casually. However, it doesn’t help if you’re going to talk to other people because it may only make things worse or make it seem like you’re spreading rumors. Either way, it won’t be beneficial to your friend unless you talk to them directly about it.

Does it Cause Problems?

Having problems related to the substance use is also another indicator. Problems at home, at work or in school, with friends, with money, and with the law are big red flags.

Always having to borrow money, getting sick, losing a job, fighting with friends or family members, sudden mood swings, unexplained aggression…these are just some signs when substance abuse have crossed the line into addiction. This is especially true when, despite many efforts to cut down or stop have been futile.

Approaching Your Friend About Addiction

It can be quite difficult to strike up a conversation about your friend’s addiction. That’s why you should plan ahead and be careful throughout. First, know about addiction and the type that your friend has. Then, approach your friend calmly and reasonably. Make sure they’re clean and sober. Avoid blame or preaching. Be honest and sincere about your concern. Understand that sliding into addiction is not intentional and addiction is not a weakness or character flaw.

You have to be prepared to be faced with defiance, denial, aggression and even a fight. Expect resistance, but don’t push your own ideas on them. Make sure you take time to also listen to what they have to say. Once you listen and get them to also listen to you, you may be able to convince them to seek treatment.

Where to Find Help

Substance abuse treatment or addiction rehabilitation is important if you want to help your friend overcome addiction.
