Oh, the years of our youth. Being so young, wild, and carefree. But unlike what we used to think then, youth ends. And reality comes biting back.
So if you had a wild, hella great time smoking weed, passing on those joints, dropping acid, popping those pills, and snorting…
Now think again.
There’s always consequence. So if you think some “harmless fun” is really just a harmless part of youth, fast forward to a few more years later to see where it would get you.
Consider these real-life scenarios based on the Elephant Journal:
- Your kids may want to know how you spent your youth and if you took any drugs. Decades from now, you’re most probably going to have teenagers. They’d be curious and brimming with the desire to experiment. They’re going to ask you about your own youth or, considering the technology we have, simply dig through the internet to find out what you were up to when you were their age. And, based on how you survived your own experiences, they are more likely to make their own choices from your own. After all, if you had partied hard, done a lot of drugs, and did heaven-knows-what else and came out okay, they would think they will too.
- You have to face the consequences, sooner or later. You may spend years, or even your whole lifetime, having the same lifestyle and not giving a care about the consequences–you just shrug it all of or find another escape. But no matter where or for how long you run, things will always have a way of catching up to you. The longer you avoid it, the harder it will be to clear up all the crap.
- Background checks. Whether you are applying for a new job, being evaluated for a promotion, or what-not–some jobs take drug use very seriously and some even go as far as digging through your social media accounts to do a background check. It is particularly tough if your drug use has been associated with brushes with the law.
- You will look older than you really are–and uglier. Sipping cosmos in television shows and movies seem glam for the stars in them but unfortunately, us normal humans are not invincible to the degenerative effects of drinking alcohol regularly, to the point of abuse. What you do with your life will eventually show in your skin, your teeth, and your face. Case in point, Lindsay Lohan, who is in her late twenties but looks like she’s in her forties.
- Consider travel plans. If you and your friends get into trouble due to drugs, you will have a hard time travelling to other countries. If you do find a destination you can go to but have to travel through other restrictive countries, then you would need to find another route, which is troublesome and costly. This is especially hard if you want to travel to another country for a job–you can’t.
- What about your mental health? Sure mixing drugs or taking mind-altering drugs for long periods of time can be fun but you know what–there are long-term mental repercussions: psychosis, mild to severe hallucinations, hard time concentrating, memory loss, and so many more.
So next time you’re tempted to use anything, pause for a while and think: Do I really want to do this? Can I face the consequences? Do I really want the consequences? Is this the best choice I can make for myself and for my future?
