The Philippines’ growing addiction to meth (shabu) is a hot spot for international meth cartel syndicates. VICE News takes a closer look.
VICE News, an international news organization, sheds light on the Philippine drug cartel with a trailer on its upcoming piece titled, Crystal Meth and Cartels in the Philippines: The Shabu Trap.
The Philippines is a rapidly growing hub for the crystal meth drug trade, and this is why Mexico’s cartels are vying for a place in the Asian country. This is evidenced by the recent bust of Mexican national Horacio Hernandez Herrera, allegedly a high-ranking member of the notorious Mexican Sinaloa Cartel. In the arrest, over $255,000 worth of meth, locally known as shabu, was seized.
The Shabu Cartel
In the past decade, shabu has immensely grown in popularity especially among the urban poor, as unemployment rates continue to skyrocket.
In the feature, VICE News sheds light on the Philippine shabu drug trade as it visited the slums of Manila, spoke to dealers and police officers alike, and uncover the deep-seated corruption within the law and order system itself, which proves to be the biggest enemy in the fight against shabu.
