There are those that involved cheer and, of course, a little booze. Before you hit the bar again on your next party, we give you the lowdown on what alcohol does to your body.

When is a little booze, just a little–and when can you say that you have crossed the line?

You may have found yourself in trouble for sending a drunk text to your ex or you may have tried to hit on your office crush after a few shots of tequila. Then there’s the rowdy, raunchy behavior on the dance floor, to be followed by a killer hangover the next day.

No matter how you approach alcohol drinking, having too much or drinking too often can give you some backlash physically and mentally.

Your Intoxicated Body

When you drink, it travels from your mouth to your esophagus, down to your stomach and into your small intestine. From here, the alcohol becomes absorbed by the rest of the body through the blood stream.

Then, your liver tries to detox your body from the alcohol in your bloodstream. This detoxed alcohol then enters the kidneys, which help the liver get rid of the alcohol by flushing it down with other liquids in your system and delivering them to the bladder, causing you to pee a lot.

This whole process leaves behind a rather unpleasant and nasty byproduct from the liver, which is acetaldehyde. This acetaldehyde is a toxic substance that harms your liver, stomach, and brain, causing you to experience those hangover symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and headache.

Your Intoxicated Brain

Alcohol also alters the brain and how it functions and perceives your surroundings, which I’m sure you already know. Alcohol affects many functions in your brain, such as your neurotransmitters, thoughts, decision-making, and motor skills.

For one, alcohol affects the cerebellum, which is your center of movement and balance. This is why you often become clumsy and you lose your balance when you are drunk.

Alcohol also affects your cerebral cortex, causing you to be less inhibited. This also affects your senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. The effects are more obvious in your sense of sight and in your thinking.

It also affects your hypothalamus and pituitary gland, causing you to have a surge of dopamine, making you more confident and more cheerful. You may even have more guts to talk to that cute guy on the next table, but since you are so clumsy, you end up tipping over.

Of course, there are worse-case scenarios, such as looking control over yourself and making you open for other people to take advantage of you, or lacking reflexes and good judgement that causes you to get into accidents on the road.

So next time you tip back a few more shots, consider these effects of alcohol on your body. After all, knowledge is power. And the power here lies in being able to discern just when you have had enough. After all, you can always celebrate the holidays (or any occasion) while still saying sober.

If you find yourself having a more-than-planned trip to the bar or drinking more than you intend to, you may be having a drinking problem.
