It also includes dependence, compulsion to drink, frequent (if not constant) preoccupation with drinking, and increasing tolerance to alcohol. People who are addicted to alcohol may also experience withdrawal symptoms when they are not drinking, making it even harder to stay sober for long periods of time.

But what is it about alcohol that makes it addictive?

Image from: www.rlss.org.uk

What Makes Alcohol Addictive?

Alcohol is also a drug or substance that is one of the highly addictive substances. Alcohol, like other addictive substances, take hold of the brain’s wiring, particularly the reward and pleasure circuits.

Alcohol consumption causes an increased rate of dopamine to flood the brain. Dopamine is responsible for feelings of pleasure, satisfaction, drive, and motivation. Frequent consumption of alcohol primes the brain to equate drinking to something good, making the person want to drink again and again.

Furthermore, alcohol also releases endorphins, which are also feel-good neurochemicals in the brain that are also activated when one uses cocaine and other drugs.

Aside from this, alcohol also inhibits the function of glutamate receptors responsible for excitability. As a result, people feel calm and have reduced anxiety levels when drinking. Furthermore, inhibitions are also decreased.

Consumption of alcohol shifts control away from the prefrontal cortext (responsible for decision-making and control of emotions). In return, the dorsal striatum becomes active, and this is responsible for habit formation. This causes mere Friday night drinks to a full-blown addiction over time.

How Addictive is Alcohol?

Many people exhibit alcohol addiction symptoms such as:

1. Withdrawal symptoms

2. Reinforcement causing repeated actions

3. Increased tolerance

4. Dependence, making it difficult for alcoholics to quit and those who are in recovery to relapse repeatedly

5. Intoxication despite personal harm and many negative effects to one’s quality of life and relationships

Do you know of someone who has alcohol addiction?
