It can drive you to success or set you up for failure. And the thing is, since we naturally and innately develop habits even without intending to, it’s always better to form good habits than bad ones.

A study has shown that almost half (actually, 45 percent) of everything we do on a daily basis is driven by the habits that we have formed over the years. And it is very difficult, often nearly impossible, for us to replace bad habits with good ones. However, if you ever decide to replace your bad habits with good ones, then here’s a list of good habits to from.

Gratitude attitude. It may be hard to focus on positive things when you’re surrounded with problems and trouble left and right. A good habit to have so you can shift focus away from your problems (which are a fact of life, by the way), is to be grateful for the things in your life that are actually going your way. So instead of dwelling on the things that you don’t have, put all your attention on what you do have no matter how little or simple they are.

Smile. Try it. Smile and your day–and your outlook–will automatically be brighter. In fact, people who smile often, as a habit, live happier lives.

Be active. This is one of the best habits to form, as this affects you physically and emotionally. Being active, life exercising or simply choosing the stairs over the elevator at work, can go a long way for your health, your confidence, and your well-being.

Eat healthy. You may be having cravings or are stress-eating at certain times, but that has to stop. An alternative is to replace your cravings with something healthier. It’s also a good idea to cut down on unhealthy food such as sugars, carbohydrates, fatty, and processed food.

Think positive. When things get overwhelming, it’s easy to be carried away by the negativity. However, you have to change your perspective and focus on the upsides of life, and there’s a bigger chance that things will truly go your way.

Daily goal setting. Make it a habit to put your efforts and time on a goal, whether they are long-term or for daily triumphs. It’s nice to list the things you want to accomplish for the day and tick them off before you go to bed, giving you a good sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

Spend wisely and save. This is one of the important things to consider in habit-forming. It’s always a good idea to have health financial status and outlook, and this can be achieved by cultivating a habit of being wise about your finances and always having money tucked in for rainy days.

Enjoy alone time. You can get swallowed up by all your duties and responsibilities, but you should take time to just slow down and focus on your self–your needs, your dreams, your aspirations.

Rest and relaxation. Your body needs to slow down. Give enough time for your mind and body to recover from the information and sensory overload daily. Even just a simple habit of rest and relaxation can go a long way to get you through tough times.

Help others. Not only acts of kindness can make others feel better–you’ll feel better about your life too. Just the simple act of being nice to your office mate or the barista where you get your morning coffee fix can go a long way and make you feel good about your life too.

We as humans are creatures of habit.
