It can manifest itself in the way you talk, behave, think, or handle situations. You can spot an arrogant person in a crowd by their overbearing behavior, their inclination to show off, as well as their unmistakable air of superiority. Simply put, an arrogant person is just so full of himself.

Generally speaking, no one wants to be around an arrogant person. It can be intolerable and irritating. With addiction, arrogance can take on a different, more monstrous form, however.

Arrogance and Addiction

Arrogance shuts down communication–with others and with yourself. It tends to repel others, unlike confidence, which is attractive.

It’s common for people who have insecurities and fears to become arrogant as a defense mechanism. However, it brings more damage than benefit as arrogance alienates people. Sometimes, the feat and insecurity and other problems that people deal with can be too much, and so they become dysfunctional. With this comes dysfunctional coping mechanisms as well. And one of these is addiction.

Once the cycle of addiction does its job, arrogance heightens even more. Drugs like meth and cocaine, stimulants, even amp up one’s feelings of confidence and self-importance, as well as recklessness, to the point that they will not listen to anybody else.

This can make them difficult to convince that they need treatment. Paired with arrogance is a denial that there is something wrong with them. Left to their defenses, there’s nothing left but a cycle of destruction.

Do you know of someone who is so arrogant and deep into his addiction that he does not listen anymore?
