Those who take this drug can be seen on the streets slowly staggering to nowhere, looking lost and incoherently mumbling to other people. Then they pass out wherever their legs take them, when their minds and bodies become overwhelmed.

What is Spice?

Also known as Black Mamba, Bliss, Fake Weed, K2, and Skunk, spice is a combination of herbs and mind-altering man-made chemicals. It is called fake weed because it often looks similar to weed and it has some of the chemicals similar to those found in marijuana. However, the horrific effects of this drug is different.

Many manufacturers sell spice disguised as incense. It is also marketed as natural and harmless, but the herbs are sprayed with all kinds of chemicals that bring about unpredictable, unpleasant, dangerous, and even fatal effects.

How Spice is Used

People use spice much like marijuana, and often they mix it with marijuana. It is used by rolling it in paper or mixed with hot water like an herbal tea. Some are available as liquids, which are used in e-cigarettes.

Effects of Spice

Users of this drug experience extreme anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations. Some may also feel extremely relaxed.

Since the drug has just been around for a couple of years, not a lot of research has been done as to how it affects the brain. What research knows so far is it affects the brain much like marijuana. However, some chemicals in it are stronger than the THC found in marijuana. Add this to the fact that it may contain many other unidentified chemicals that change from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Other effects are:

rapid heart rate

increased blood pressure

nausea

vomitting

confusion

violent behavior

suicidal behavior

heart attacks leading to death

While spice may not be available (yet) in the Philippines, it still pays to be vigilant and to know that drugs really affect your brain and body in unpredictable yet still destructive ways.

If you or someone you know is addicted to drugs, seek help.
