Fame and addiction is indeed a deadly mix, a perfect recipe for trouble.

Looking at entertainment news and social media accounts of celebrities can easily fool anyone. You would think that celebrities indeed have it all–the money, the fame, the life. What you don’t know is being famous has its pitfall too. There’s an excessive amount of pressure to look and act a certain way, as well as be in constant scrutiny of the press and the people.

Amidst all this, people who are in the echelons of fame can easily fall prey to addiction. There’s evidence of that throughout history, in the deaths of many famous celebrities such as Kurt Cobain, River Phoenix, Amy Winehouse, Heath Ledger, and Robin Williams, to name just a few.

Fame and Addiction

Here are some reasons why they, as well as many others, have succumbed to addiction despite seemingly “having it all” in life as a famous celebrity:

  • Many may have already been abusing substances even before they became famous
  • Many careers that lead to fame, such as acting, art, and music, often involve the culture of heavy drinking and drug use
  • They may have plenty of disposable income that are spent on recreational drugs
  • The pressures that come with being famous can easily be used as an excuse to use and abuse substances like drugs and alcohol, like an escape, respite, reward, or privilege
  • The personality traits that lead one to be famous is similar to the personality traits of those with addictive personality
  • Those who need fame and attention as well as those who abuse drugs and alcohol similarly need higher dopamine spikes compared to an average person
  • Many famous people are actually high-functioning addicts who, at the end of the day, feel entitled to substance use
  • They are more likely to get away with anything, even much more than an average person, simply because they are celebrities
  • They feel that the normal rules don’t apply to them, giving way to pride and selfishness as well as high self-esteem leading to “terminal uniqueness”
  • Young stars who grew up under the spotlight of celebrity may feel like they missed out a lot on life and therefore turn to drugs and alcohol to “cope”
