The 12-Step Program
the framework
What the 12 Steps Help You Build
At Bridges of Hope, the 12-Step Program is integrated into our broader approach to addiction treatment. It gives clients a structured way to reflect, grow, and develop healthier ways of living—both during treatment and beyond.
Self-Awareness
Understand addiction, recognize unhealthy patterns, and become more honest with yourself.
Accountability
Take responsibility for your choices and begin repairing the harm caused by addiction.
Spiritual Growth
Develop personal values, reflection, and a sense of purpose as part of the recovery journey.
Lifelong Recovery
Learn principles and practices that can continue to support you long after residential treatment.
Recovery is a process
The 12 Steps of Recovery
Recovery is a process, not a single moment. The 12 Steps provide a progressive framework for understanding addiction, making meaningful changes, and building a healthier life.
01 — Acknowledge the Problem
We admitted we were powerless over our addiction—that our lives had become unmanageable.
02 — Find Hope
Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
03 — Choose a New Direction
Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God.
04 — Take an Honest Look Within
Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
05 — Share and Accept the Truth
Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
06 — Become Ready to Change
Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
07 — Practice Humility
Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.
08 — Recognize the Harm Caused
Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
09 — Make Amends
Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10 — Continue the Work
Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11 — Strengthen Your Spiritual Connection
Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us
12 — Carry Recovery Forward
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
