New year got you down? Here are 6 Reasons to Be Grateful for Being Sober This 2017.
The dawning of the new year helps people reflect on their lives and how the year went for them. This new year also allows them to make plans and look forward in anticipation of what the year could bring.

The ringing in of 2017 is also a strange time, as you look not just back and forward, but also around at the people and things around you. Strange, indeed, especially when you start to think how you’d want to travel more, have more money, get fit, eat better, be more active, and just feed that demon called envy inside you.
However, whether or not 2017 will be a good year to you doesn’t really depend on the things that you don’t or do have. It’s really just all about perspective. Or, more aptly, how you make the best of what you have and be grateful in the process.
Look around you. There’s so many reasons to be gratefull for, especially now that you are healthy, sober, and alive. Those things are enough to give you a more positive perspective in life.
And if you want more proof, here are a few reminders to get you on the right frame of mind this 2017.
6 Reasons to Be Grateful for Being Sober This 2017
1. You are strong. You’ve been through a lot, especially in your journey towards sobriety. And now that you are sober and recovering, you are not only healing yourself, but probably your relationships as well. And that’s a tough job. Still, look at you. You’re alive and kicking, experiencing everything that life has to offer without needing drugs or alcohol as a crutch or an escape. You can cope, you can deal, you can live, and you can work on your own happiness. Be grateful for that.
2. Your mind is clear. When you’re in active addiction, it could be hard to find peace of mind. You have all your troubles coming in from every which way. And that could be exhausting and frustrating. Now, your mind is clear and at ease. You’re not running away from anyone or anything. Now, when you settle on your bed at the end of the day, you can be at peace with the world and with yourself as you close your eyes to sleep.
3. You have improved relationships. At this point, you may have restored or at least tried to repair broken relationships. Or, at the very least, you are not in the midst of active conflict with anyone. Besides, you are blessed to be around people who love you, whether they are friends, family, or your support group.
4. You are healthy. While before you’re broke and in bad shape, you are now in better shape. You’re not doing anything more to harm yourself, and if anything, you have a healthier, more active lifestyle. Now, you are healthy and your life and body is full of promise.
5. You have a purpose. Whether it’s to live each day sober or to fulfill a dream or passion project, your life now has purpose. Before you may have just lived day by day running after one high after the next, now you have a better grip of your life and where you want to be. You have a plan for yourself and you’re inching towards realizing your goals.
6. You’re alive. Addiction takes thousands, if not millions, of lives every year. You yourself may know of some people–friends or those who you run around with while you’re in active addiction–whose lives have been claimed by addiction or some incident related to it.
Now, you have your life and you’re living today. You have this gift–not nearly perfect, perhaps–but it’s yours and you can make the most of it.
The new year is filled with promise, but don’t be discouraged if things don’t go as planned. By remembering to be grateful for the little things and the big things–and best of all for being sober–you will not lose your way. In fact, you will gain better perspective to stay clean, sober and positive this 2017.
