As the war against drugs and those who are for and against it rage on, millions of Filipinos, especially children and teens, are exposed to the meth menace. This is because meth is present in their communities and, for some, even right in their own homes.

Aside from the potential to use and become addicted, the other face of the problem lies in the abuse that people, especially the youth, gets from their family members who are abusing or are already addicted to meth. Like a drop of ink on clear water, the problem with meth, or shabu, is that it can easily negatively affect and taint the person using it, the immediate family surrounding him, and the community in which he lives.

But what can you do? If you haven’t touched meth yet, good for you. However, if you’re thinking about trying it, whether out of curiosity or peer pressure–think again!

To help convince you, here are the 10 reasons why you should never try meth:

10 Reasons to Avoid Meth Like a Plague

1. Highly addictive. People who use meth can easily and quickly get addicted. Once they begin, many find themselves wanting to use more and more to keep feeling that “high.”

2. Toxicity. Meth in itself has toxic effects to the brain and body. Then, there’s the fact that you may never know what other chemicals the meth in the streets are cut with. Nevertheless, the effects have significant damage even with short-term uses.

3. Danger. High doses can cause the body to overheat as well as to get convulsions or have heart problems such as stroke and heart failure.

4. Paranoia, anxiety, and psychosis.. In the long-term, meth abuse can lead to many mental problems that may even prove to be irreversible for some. There are also instances when you may even have hallucinations that can put you and the people around you in danger.

5. Violence and aggression. Mood swings are common for those who abuse substances. Depression, restlessness, irritability, and violent streaks are also common as it is hand in hand with the fact that meth can make people feel uninhibited and more confident and powerful.

6. Meth labs in your community. Being around meth labs or even drug dens can cause trouble for you. Homes turned into makeshift methlabs can easily cause a disaster such as explosions or exposure to harmful chemicals. Going into a drug den can also put you at risk of being caught by authorities in a raid or being part of a brawl between users and pushers.

7. Risking children. Children in families where there is at least one user puts children at risk of physical, verbal, and sexual abuse. They may also be neglected and even put in dangerous situations.

8. Risks in pregnancy. Those who are pregnant and are using meth are also at a very high risk. They are putting themselves and their unborn child in danger. Meth can be absorbed by the baby during pregnancy, and this can cause congenital deformities, miscarriages, premature delivery, and many other problems.

9. Withdrawal symptoms. Those who stop using meth or are without it for long periods of time experience awful withdrawal symptoms such as depression, aggression, irritability, paranoia, and this can make it hard not only for the person but for the people around him.

10. It’s just not worth it. So you think you can use meth just to experience the high? We’re telling you–it’s just not worth it. Getting involved in something illegal causes more trouble than what it is actually worth, which is not much and not a lot, if you take a look at short and long -term consequences.

Nothing good will ever come out of taking meth. Just ask other people who have used and are addicted to it. They may even tell you that they wish they never tried it in the first place.
