Taking more than one drug at a time, like a drug cocktail, can magnify the effects of each drug and cause lethal consequences.
Taking two or more drugs is not uncommon. Polysubstance use, which is the act of taking more than one drug to augment, supplement, or complement the effects of the first drug, is actually the norm for many drug users.
There are those who would drink and get hammered in a party, or smoke weed just to relax, but there are those who take other drugs such as cocaine, which users eventually supplement with another drug, either to top up the upper with another upper, or balance out the high with a downer.
In fact, this is very common that many highly publicized celebrity deaths are even from a mix of substances such as heroin, cocaine, and alcohol.
What we don’t know, however, is how you may exponentially increase your health risks by mixing these substances in a drug cocktail or sorts. For example, taking two uppers can increase the heart rate and blood pressure to abnormal levels. Meanwhile, taking two or more sedatives, or downers, can increase your risk to end up in a coma or even dead.
Here are some widely used, yet lethal, drug cocktails:
1. Cocaine and Alcohol. This is a common drug cocktail, or combination, and there are even those cocaine users who only take the drug when they’re drinking. Cocaine is a stimulant and alcohol is a sedative, therefore causing an effect that is not good for the heart. The mix of cocaine and alcohol in the blood can make the euphoric effects last a little bit longer, however, it can still be toxic.
2. MDMA and Ketamine.

2. MDMA and Ketamine. This is a popular mix, especially in the party or club scene where MDMA is also popular. People often start off with MDMA to feel energized and may take K to help push them a little bit more or to come back down from the high. However, the two together can give you a violent and rapid onset of the high.
3. MDMA and LSD or Acid. While this is a rare cocktail, it’s still being used by many, to dire consequences. The combination of these two stimulants can leave you with potential heart and blood pressure issues, on top of intense hallucinations.
4. MDMA and Alcohol. With rave and party scenes in full swing, MDMA and alcohol is a common mix. That doesn’t make it a good idea, though. Together, these substances can greatly dehydrate your body.
5. Marijuana and Alcohol. Many who smoke marijuana or weed would enjoy it with alcohol. However, taken in huge amounts together can make a person really dizzy and nauseous, The alcohol amplifies the effect of the weed, making you feel more stoned.
6. Marijuana and MDMA. This is commonly taken when people want to get rid of the MDMA comedown. After partying with MDMA, the weed mellows down the after-effects of MDMA. And if you’re susceptible to paranoia and anxiety, this combo will heighten it.
7. Ketamine and Alcohol. Together, you can get bladder problems due to dehydration. You will also be sedated to the point that you will lose your balance, lose your coordination, and get in all sorts of trouble, especially if you’re driving.
8. Crack Cocaine and Heroin. This, also known as speedball, is a lethal dose from which many can die from even if they have tried it just once. While it’s fairly common as the heroin is used to mellow out the come down from crack cocaine, the risk is high. And if you’re used to high doses of crack, then you’ll need more heroin, and there’s a bigger chance of overdose.
Mixing these drugs is no joke, especially these days when the drug trade uses various kinds of chemicals, even household substances, to cut the drugs and make more profit.
