Drugs and Violence: A Deadly Link

drugs-and-violence

It’s not rocket science. The relationship between drugs and violence is obvious. Drug abuse leads to violence.

Abusers of certain drugs, such as meth or shabu tend to be paranoid and aggressive, and they tend to commit violent crimes. Those who are under the influence of certain drugs can perpetrate violence because of the disinhibiting nature of drugs, making them much  more confident, more impulsive, more aggressive, and with a heightened violent streak. They also think less of the consequences of their actions. Alcohol aggravates the situation, as many cases suggest that crimes committed by people who are under the influence of drugs are abusing alcohol.

In addition to this, distribution of drugs, or drug pushing, can also lead to violent crimes. This creates two main links that relate drugs and violence together.

Meth and violence

Here in the country and anywhere in the world, meth and crack cocaine are widely linked to increased violent behavior. This is because both drugs are such powerful stimulants. They increase focus and alertness, induce paranoia, and make people to a variety of unpredictable and impulsive things. They are also irrational, restless, easily agitated, and are unable to control their behavior, especially violent impulses.

Many drug addicts exhibit “tweaking,” which involves repeated irrational behavior, paranoia, belligerence, restlessness, even some hallucinations, and some violent search to get that next high. When people reach this state of tweaking, they have no qualms anymore about getting involved in violent acts such as sexual assaults, fights, prostitution, and homicide.

Meth and hypersexuality

Meth and crack cocaine are also associated with hyper-sexuality. This is when users experience extreme sexual urges that are uncontrollable, aggressive, and compulsive. This means they engage in compulsive masturbation, high-risk sexual behaviors, are even easy to get aroused, and highly sexually violent and abusive. Some of these feelings can even cause one to commit sexual assault and rape.

Drug distribution and violence

If you’ve been watching movies or the news, you’ll know that violence is associated with drug distribution. Organizations involved in drug distribution resort to street level violence to resolve business disputes, enforce discipline, or settle issues over territory and transactions. Getting involved in drug distribution and trafficking can also lead to violence as drug dealers and drug lords, as well as anyone connected to them, either compete against each other over their markets or are clamoring for protection.

Many illegal drugs in our country, particularly shabu, are often sold and peddled in poverty-stricken areas. The people belonging in these communities have few options for work and entertainment. They also battle with other issues such as broken families, unemployment, abuse, and many other things. The growth of drug use in these areas also show increased rates in violent crimes.
