9 Ways to Quit Smoking

1. Be honest with yourself. Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen. Now think about the things you like about smoking and write them down. Next to that list, make another list, this time of the reasons why you should quit smoking. Doing this will give you perspective and get you motivated.

2. Set a date. If necessary, set it to paper with your signature and even witnesses. Having other people know about your quit date allows you to have a support system to keep you going.

3. Wean out of your daily number. Stop bringing cartons of cigarettes with you. Just buy a pack at a time. And then bring 5-6 sticks to begin with. This will allow you to cut down because you don’t have any cigarette handy all the time. Later on, you can taper off your cigarette smoking to just a couple until you’ve finally gone a day without them.

4. Find healthier alternatives. Give yourself a list of things you can do when you’re craving for a cigarette. Let these things be your alternative to smoking.

5. Save money. Put all the money you would have spent on cigarettes in a jar or a piggy bank. This will give you significant motivation to quit smoking, especially if you see just how much you really spend on cigarettes on a daily basis.

6. Find a healthy snack. Quitting can give you jitters and make you restless. The jitters can be made worse by coffee, so be sure to choose decaf while you’re quitting. Also, bring healthy snacks to munch on, such as nuts, to help you cope.

7. Create smoke-free zones. You’re better of quitting when you’re not constantly surrounded by other people who smoke. Make your home, office, and car a smoke-free zone.

8. Change up your routine. Smoking can easily come as second nature to you because it’s ingrained into your daily routine. Change your routine so that you have less cravings.
