process addiction

Process addiction or behavioral addiction revolves around compulsions. Let’s find out more about this type of addiction disorder.

Addiction doesn’t just occur in the form of substances such as drugs and alcohol. There are instances when physical dependence is not the only criteria for someone to be diagnosed with an addiction. Process addiction, also known as behavioral addiction, can also happen without the physical effects like those with substance addiction.

Let’s take a closer look at process addiction.

What is process addiction?

Process addiction involves the strong, irresistible compulsion to continually engage in an activity or behavior despite the negative effects it brings. The negative effects may impact the health, well-being, and security of the person and his family. It also impacts his mental and physical health as well as create dysfunction in his home and community.

Unlike substance addiction, which involves things like alcohol, cocaine, or meth, a person with process addiction gets his high by engaging in a certain activity. He may then later on feel guilt, remorse, disgust, or become overwhelmed of the consequences of his deeds. However, like a person with substance addiction, people with process addiction are unable to stop and may often require intervention and treatment.

Most common process addictions

  • Gambling addiction
  • Sex addiction
  • Pornography addiction
  • Video game or gaming addiction
  • Shopping addiction
  • Food addiction

Many people enjoy food, sex, games, and even some gambling. In fact, it’s natural to find gratification from these things. However, it’s when things become out of control that the activity can be considered problematic.

Here are the criteria that have to be met before a behavior can be considered as a process addiction:

  • There’s a struggle with mental or physical health issues as a consequence of the behavior or the inability to stop the behavior
  • Difficulty in relationships at home and at work because the behavior is disruptive
  • Negative consequences that are directly caused by the behavior
  • Inability to stop despite these negative consequences
