One easy way to put these questions to rest came from Sarah Allen Benton, a therapist and author of Understanding the High Functioning Alcoholic. She states, “If you are trying to ‘control’ something such as drinking, then the problem is generally out of control.

Addiction happens when you you lose the ability to manage your life without your substance of choice, in this case alcohol. There will be instances when people would drink one to two glasses of wine or a couple of bottles of beer daily and not consider themselves alcoholics. They would go on with this for years, until they realize that they are missing out a lot of things in their work or family life. There will also be instances when a recovering drug addict would switch to alcohol as an addiction but wouldn’t initially consider this addiction per se, until the cycle goes that familiar path. There will also be some instances when people don’t realize the problem until they hit rock bottom, until it’s too late.
