Marijuana, despite what you see on television and in the movies, is a dangerous drug to be addicted to. In fact, it can be as addictive as alcohol. It can also bring about many harmful effects to the body, the mind, and your life.
Approximately 10% of people who smoke marijuana get addicted to it. While the 90% can smoke it recreationally and be relatively fine, the 10% who do get addicted will get more than what they bargained for–it doesn’t look good.
The Consequences of Marijuana Abuse
Brain Abnormalities. Significant brain abnormalities were found in adults who smoked marijuana for at least once a week. These abnormalities were found in their brain’s pleasure centers, therefore bringing to light the potential of these people to develop other addictions later on. These symptoms are also seen to affect their ability to feel, empathize, and deal with their own emotions.
Neurotoxic effects. Those who use marijuana since adolescence were found to have declining IQs by 6 points on average. What’s more is, stopping marijuana will not restore the lost points. This just shows how the drug affects the brain’s development.
Depression. Those who use marijuana on a regular basis are also more prone to developing depression. They are even studied to be 4 times more likely to develop depression than non-smokers of marijuana.
Psychosis. Those who smoke marijuana are also 3 times more likely to develop psychosis symptoms, including manic-depression.
Aside from the above consequences, marijuana abuse can also lead to many other negative effects to the body, the mind, and one’s own quality of life.
