The month of May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. This is a celebration in order to advocate for mental health and help educate the public about the issues surrounding it. Additionally, it’s also an opportunity to help reduce the dangerous misconceptions that surround mental health.

At Bridges of Hope, we understand the role of mental health in whether or not a person is at risk of engaging in substance abuse. Mental health is also important in avoiding or overcoming substance use and behavioral disorders. Bridges of Hope Supports Mental Health Awareness Month

Globally 14% of the population struggle with mental and behavioral disorders. This is 450 million individuals worldwide. Here in the Philippines, 3.6 million Filipinos suffer from different kinds of mental, neurological, and substance use disorder.

This said, mental health awareness is important. Whether or not a person suffers from these issues, perhaps they know someone who does and can recognize the issues and provide support.

Discrimination and negative stigmas attached to various mental health problems often discourage people from getting help. They may even be in denial or are perhaps unaware that they have a problem. This is why awareness is very important.

Mental health issues can come in many forms:

  • Substance use disorders (addiction)
  • Non-substance use disorders or behavioral addictions
  • Mood disorders
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Personality Disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders

It’s possible that people can be diagnosed with only one or multiple disorders at a time. This is called a dual diagnosis.

For those who want to promote good mental health, it’s important to practice the following:

  • Staying healthy
  • Staying active or having regular physical activities
  • Avoiding alcohol and drugs
  • Eating well
  • Getting adequate sleep
  • Talking about your feelings
  • Caring for other people
  • Connecting with family or with others
  • Asking for help when you need it

It’s important to practice the above. Like or body that needs nutrition and needs to be cared for, our mental health needs to be maintained as well. While there are people who get sad, nervous, lonely, or anxious, these can be overcome. These don’t last long. However, if these feelings persist, these can lead to mental health conditions. Left untreated, these can turn for the worse.
