Many people say weed, pot, or marijuana is harmless. So if you smoke a lot of pot, do you really need to go into rehab? Read on to find out.
While there’s an enduring socio-political debate about its legalization and health benefits, we will not tackle that. In this article, we’ll address the issue of treatment for those who compulsively smoke weed and are even addicted to marijuana.
Marijuana Addiction
When it comes to addiction, it doesn’t really matter if the substance is legal, illegal, synthetic, natural, beneficial, harmless, medical, or dangerous. Addiction involves how the substance (or even behavior) affects your thinking, actions, motivations, and drives.
In a previous article titled Marijuana Addiction: Signs and Symptoms, we have tackled how marijuana, just like any other substances, can be addictive. And as a disease of compulsion, marijuana addiction can lead to many negative and dangerous consequences.
Handling the Misconceptions
A lot of it has something to do with how media portrays those who are addicted to hard drugs like meth and cocaine, versus those who are addicted to weed. Somewhere, there’s a disconnect about how society demonizes those who abuse hard drugs and those who abuse marijuana.
However, this doesn’t change the fact that there are people who can’t go a day without smoking weed. They can’t face life sober. They can’t deal with certain aspects of their lives, whether good or bad, without the need to have their minds altered by marijuana. And this is the very definition of addiction.
A person may hold down a job, have a secure family life, but smoke weed every day. There are those people who doesn’t fit the hippie stereotype attached to using marijuana–and yet they can be addicted.
Again, addiction is a disease of the mind and the behavior, and not just about the drug itself. It’s a disease that doesn’t choose its victim, so relying on your preconceived pictures of what an addict is supposed to look like really isn’t going to cut it.
Should weed addicts seek treatment?
The answer is yes. Marijuana is a drug, and marijuana addiction is real. If you suspect that you or someone you know is suffering from marijuana addiction, then you should seek treatment.
