Why me?
Many people who have succumbed and are struggling with addiction may have asked themselves this question at one point in their lives.
So why is it that one person can be addicted and others don’t? Why them? Why me?
Let’s take a look.

Everyone is unique
The human brain and body is very complex. Many parts are constantly at work to make sure that you function normally. While every human has pretty much the same anatomy and physiology, there are nuances that make people have different reactions to certain things.
This makes some people more tolerant to excessive pain, while some can’t stand even just a small amount of hurt. There are some that have incredible resilience and endurance, while there are those who don’t.
An individual’s mind and body react differently to different stimuli and situations.
Capacity
People have different capacities. Some can eat loads of food, while others are fine with small amounts. There are people who can take copious amounts of beer and not be buzzed, while there are those who easily get tipsy with just a glass of wine.
The same can be said when it comes to illegal drugs. Some people just have a different capacity than others.
Dependence
This is a major factor that contributes to the question “Why me?”
Some people can easily build dependence when they drink or take drugs just a couple of times. There are those, on the other hand, who build this dependence over time, like years. Still, it’s the same: the more they take, the more then need, the more often they need it. The cycle begins, with ever-increasing amounts over ever-increasing frequencies. And here is addiction.
No way out
Once people become dependent, there is no easy way out. However, they only find this out when it’s too late and it really is seemingly impossible to stop. It is uncommon for these people to still continue using just because stopping is already painful, physically and psychologically.
There are those who try to quit drugs and alcohol by themselves, but find all their efforts a failure. While they have the best intentions, the grip of the addiction is even stronger.
What can you do?
Those who try to find answers to their addiction, the “Why me?” may find it hard to come up with answers.
However, there is always hope. It never really is too late.
The solution comes in the form of professional help, where rehab professionals as well as a support system can help addicts find a way out of the dangerous roundabout that is addiction.
