It’s no surprise that most people’s resolutions fall through. And this time may not be different. We find ourselves setting our 2017 resolutions in a panic-stricken state all after spending the entire December indulging ourselves: eating, drinking, partying, and shopping.

So how can you create a happy, healthy, hope-filled, and balanced new year and make your 2017 resolutions stick this time? Read these tips to find out.

Tips for Making Your 2017 Resolutions Stick

1. Start steps. Yes. Start small. Think of resolutions that you can actually keep. Instead of targeting an active lifestyle, how about dedicate to exercise at least 20 minutes daily, or schedule a trip to the gym at least two times a week. Instead of fully committing to a vegan diet, why not eat healthier, life foregoing a sugar-loaded dessert for something healthier like fruits and yogurt.

2. Replace unhealthy behaviors. You don’t want to overhaul yourself all at once. This is just plain unrealistic. To make things more manageable, reflect on your unhealthy, negative behaviors. Then, try to replace them with healthier ones. For example, if you spend 30 minutes to over an hour poring over your social media feeds at night, why not replace this habit of reading a good book or learning a new skill online.

3. Express it. You have a better chance of keeping your resolutions if you talk about it or write it. This gives you a better perspective. Furthermore, having a trusted friend as a sounding board can make it less intimidating and they may even help encourage you and keep you on track.

4. Take it easy. Well, unexpected things happen throughout the course of a year, so don’t beat yourself up if you fail or falter. What’s important is you don’t give up. Just remember to take small steps and pick yourself up when you make mistakes so you don’t lose your eyes on the prize.

5. Ask for help. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask for help. Getting support from people who cares about you even strengthens your resolve and further increases your resilience to bounce back from hurdles. They can even provide feedback to help you improve and do better.
