To avoid idleness in addiction recovery, you have to commit to disciplining your mind and body. Boredom, after all, while not a strong emotion, still poses as one of the biggest triggers for relapse.

As the saying goes, “An idle mind is the devil’s playground.” And this can never be any truer when it comes to addiction. Often, people who are bored and idle resort to drugs or alcohol as a convenient or exciting escape. Soon, they find themselves creating a pattern until this develops into addiction. Then one day, they’ll just wake up with no way to stop, spiraling downwards in destruction.

The same can be said when you’re in recovery. Boredom and idleness can still be triggers for relapse. That’s why it’s very important to avoid idleness by changing your behavior, knowing how to handle boredom, and reducing relapse risks.

Here are some tips to avoid idleness and therefore secure long-term or even life-long addiction recovery.

Tips to Avoid Idleness in Addiction Recovery

1. Engage your mind with something worthwhile. Instead of spending hours just fiddling with your phone or flipping channels, why not set your sights on something more productive, like reading a book, answering puzzles, or even just meditation?

2. Be in the “now.” Be in the moment. Take the time to focus your mind and body on the things that you’re feeling from moment to moment. By exercising this mindfulness even in the most mundane thing that you’re doing, your mind becomes more active and you become more engaged.

3. Turn off the screens. TVs, tablets, smartphones, and computers can bombard you with information, images, and sounds in rapid-fire. This can overload your senses and eventually, you don’t pay attention. Eventually, your attention span decreases. Make sure to be unplugged or turn off your screens for at least one hour everyday to give your senses some room to breathe and rest.

4. Put a positive spin on every situation. Instead of feeling bad about doing the chores, make it more meaningful and positive. Take this moment to think over your life and make plans for the future, for example. Instead of getting bored over the tasks that you don’t like, change your perspective.

5. Make every moment and opportunity. Every moment is an opportunity to grow. So even if you’re pulling the weeds, washing dishes or sweeping the floor, this is a chance to meditate or improve on your ideas.

6. Make the mundane interesting. Boredom and idleness is actually a state of mind. To avoid idleness, you can make any situation more fun. Role play, even by yourself, talk to yourself, talk to a friend, daydream, plan, or exercise.

If you, however, have relapsed due to boredom, it’s not too late for you yet. You can still go back on the path of recovery and sobriety. Call or text us at Bridges of Hope: 09175098826. We provide top-notch, private, addiction rehab treatment.

Thanks for the tips on avoiding idleness when recovering from an addiction. I agree that having a positive attitude is important not only when recovering from addiction, but in everyday life. I would imagine that life would be pretty hard if you had a negative outlook on everything that happened.
